Booking the best vacation property experience:

When to visit Oak Island & When to reserve a Wilmington, NC rental home:

  • To book the best rental home within budget, we highly recommend reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at Wilmington, NC restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
  • Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family.
  • Property managers typically offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Wilmington, NC visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby shops and restaurants.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Start by choosing your vacation dates and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Kathy's Dream: Dog-Friendly Home Just One Block from Beach Access has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your vacation.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a rental that allows animals. Request information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.

Know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • During arrival, record any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your life at home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your rental home while you're out. Keep your property safe!
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to stimulate more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
