Strategies for getting the perfect Holden Beach vacation home experience:

Find your perfect rental home:

  • In the Wilmington, NC area, The sooner you can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Booking your rental property six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
  • Summertime is high season in the Wilmington, NC area. Booking your vacation rental in Spring or Fall is an excellent way to save on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies usually offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Wilmington, NC visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for local tours, shops, and attractions.

Finding the perfect vacation rental:

  • Select a group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group needs. Oceanfront home with WiFi, private walkway to beach & central AC has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Wilmington, NC vacation rental search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, email the property management company before booking the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

More considerations:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. Put the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a fantastic vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
