Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation home experience:
Sticking to a rental home budget:
- The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved very early. Booking your rental up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
- To find the largest vacation home within budget, we suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Wilmington, NC attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Property management companies sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Property managers typically offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Wilmington, NC visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Choose your vacation week and budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Renovated Keeper's Landing Cottage with 2 carts, bikes and beach gear awaits. has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property manager before booking your home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what is best for your group.
- Some rentals allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
Tips for a great stay:
- Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- At Check-in, note any damages to the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an incredible resource to find the best local scenic spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected everything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
